From Fittings to Final Touches: The Ultimate Bridal Timeline

From Fittings to Final Touches: The Ultimate Bridal Timeline

If you’re planning your wedding day, first of all, congratulations are in order! This is the most exciting time in your life, planning all the little details that will make your special day the most wonderful day of your life. While your wedding date might feel like it’s ages away, the key detail to think about now is when to buy your wedding dress. Nine months out from your wedding day is the sweet spot for finding your dress, though many would suggest starting your search even a year out. It’s always best to start as early as possible to give yourself plenty of time to browse dresses, try on as many as you can, and leave room for production time, shipping, and alterations.

If you’re unsure of what to expect during this process, today we’re going to give you our ultimate guideline to shopping for your wedding dress!

12 Months Before the Wedding
Ideally when you’re at this point, you’ve nailed down the wedding date at least. This is the perfect time to start shopping for your wedding dress. You should start browsing online for inspiration to get an idea of what you like and dislike, book your bridal appointment (or more if you plan on shopping at multiple boutiques), and get ready to try on gorgeous dresses!

9 Months Before the Wedding
Here’s the deal: you can purchase your wedding dress earlier or later than this and be fine, but we really recommend you consider this your final deadline for buying your wedding dress if you have this much time before your wedding date. Waiting longer means you could face some rush fees or risk not having your wedding dress arrive in time for alterations before the wedding.

5 Months Before the Wedding
While you’re waiting for your wedding dress to arrive, this is a good time to find a seamstress to handle your wedding dress alterations. Luckily, we have an in-house seamstress who can help! Just make sure you book an appointment so that you can get your wedding dress altered in time before the big day. And we’re here to help guide you through the process of figuring out what alterations you want made to your dress!

This is also a great time to start thinking about your accessories! It’s a great idea to have your veil, jewelry, and shoes picked out before your fittings start so that you can get a vision of what your complete look will be. The shoes are the most vital part, as you’ll want to bring those to your fittings so the seamstress will know what length your dress needs to be.

3 Months Before the Wedding
Hopefully by this time, your dress should be ready to pick up from the boutique so you can start the alteration process! You might need up to three fittings depending on how things go, so this gives you wiggle room before the big day.

6 to 8 Weeks Before the Wedding
Your first fitting should be scheduled at least six to eight weeks before your wedding. During this appointment, you'll work with your seamstress to make any necessary minor adjustments, such as altering the neckline or trimming the train. Hold off on purchasing your undergarments until after this fitting; this way, you can determine the best foundation for your specific dress!

4 Weeks Before the Wedding
At the four-week mark, your second fitting should be on the calendar. By now, most of the significant alteration work should be complete, giving you a much clearer visual of how the dress will look. If you haven't already, finalize your headpiece, veil, and other accessories. Also, come prepared with your chosen undergarments and shapewear.

2 Weeks Before the Wedding
While some dresses only require two fittings, a third and final round of alterations might be necessary, typically taking place two weeks before your wedding day. At this point, your gown should be nearly flawless. Try on your entire wedding ensemble - including your veil, shoes, and all other accessories - and prepare for an emotional first full look!

1 Week Before the Wedding
Now, it’s officially crunch time! You'll need to pick up your finished gown and settle the remaining balance, including alteration fees. Your seamstress will also provide you with a protective garment bag to keep your precious cargo safely stored until the big day!
